DA lied to us!

1 min read
They said their scheduled maintenence was gonna be from 10PM to 11:59PM! But when I came on at 8:05AM this morning (which is 5 minutes past midnight in DA's time zone), they were still doing maintenence work! What the fuck, DA?! Why the fuck did you lie to us like that?! Why didn't you just say it was gonna take you from 10PM to 12:34AM?! It would have saved me all the trouble of getting up exactly an hour later than I normally do!

This is someone else's review, not mine, because there was someone with a review of Trade Ya! that had that in their journal title, and since I can't find that journal, I'm just gonna post this review from someone else.

This review will contain spoilers for those who have not seen the latest episode.

The premise of this story is that the ponies' friendship is tested when a trip to the Rainbow Falls Traders Exchange goes wrong.

Something I feel the need to note in this episode is that this is a story that has no clear central figure, and instead goes on as an ensemble piece, with all of the main six character contributing to it. Stories like this are a rarity in this show as most episodes focus on one or two of the main cast with the rest providing a supporting role. That's no mark against it however as I've often felt that episodes like this can work, and indeed, several of my all-time favourite episodes, like "Best Night Ever", have been such ensemble stories. As such, it stands out as a fair unique outing for this season so far.

The idea that the girls' friendships would be under strain from what they go through in this episode strikes me as a fairly odd thing. Now, to be fair, I can understand how things can be stressful between them because of what happens, and if such things were to happen to real-life people, I imagine they'd behave no differently. But the issue is we know the kinds of trials these girls have gone through together. Life-and-death situations, squabbles, and even some turning their backs on one another. And through all of it, they've remained friends.

And that's really the biggest weakness of the episode, It wants us to think that what happens here is going to bring their relationships to the brink, but we all know deep down that isn't going to happen .This show is all about how important friends and friendships are, and it's very unlikely that this sort of thing was ever going to be the thing that splits them up, or even leaves any kind of dent in their friendship. As such, the central premise was somewhat undermined, as I was always aware that, no matter how much things seemed to heat up between them, these girls weren't going to just swear off each other like the above summary might lead me to believe.

In many ways, the basic setup of this story reminds me a great deal of "Castle Mane-ia", in that we have three separate groups all sharing the episode with their own unique plot-line. I enjoyed that particular division of screen-time the last time we got it, and I'm equally pleased with it here, especially considering that we have team-ups that I always like seeing. Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash are great foils for each other, Pinkie's brash antics compared to Twilight's more reserved actions are fun, and Rarity and Applejack have been an amusing pairing ever since season one. As such, the episode is filled with lots of little character moments that are very good to watch.

The individual plots however are something I've seen many times in other stories. Rainbow's "trade X for Y over and over" story is a trope that's been done plenty of times in other kids shows, and I'm sorry to say that the episode does little to improve on it here. Rarity and Applejack's story didn't really go anywhere, but their interactions at least made it entertaining to watch. Of all of them, Twilight's arc in this episode was the most interesting. Not only do we have her experiencing more of her new responsibilities as a Princess, but we also have her realizing the sentimental value of her books, and I'll admit to feeling a tug at my heartstrings over her stroll down memory lane as she fawned over them.

As for the other characters, there were plenty of their regular traits that can be enjoyed here, from Dash's continuing obsession over her Daring Do books, to Fluttershy's demure attitude towards others, to AJ and Rarity's usual division between practicality and aesthetics. Fluttershy especially stands out among the rest of the cast here because of her willingness to help Rainbow achieve what she wants, even going so far as to have herself be traded to do so.

That was a moment I had to really think hard on though. I know Rainbow can get very caught up in her passions, so I suppose her obliviousness to everything else can be forgiven to an extent. But even so, I find it hard to think that she could be so entrenched in her desires that she'd actually not even blink at the prospect of losing her own friend to this. And speaking of which, the idea that individual ponies can be included as part of a trade just opens up a slew of uncomfortable questions about this whole traders exchange. I know that's probably not what they were going for, but even so, I think it's something Hasbro might have wanted to re-read before putting it into the episode.

Now that I really think on it, I'm probably forced to conclude that this episode probably has the lightest story we've had so far. There's was no real conflict to be had, save for the occasional squabble between the cast members, there were no real earth-shattering events to speak of, and the development of the characters was fairly light. This makes "Trade Ya" far more of a slice-of-life story than we usually get on this show. And that's fine by me. Not every story needs to be an adventure. Sometimes just having these six together and interacting is all I need to enjoy it.

Time to discuss the humour of the episode, and this week there were plenty of funny moments. Pinkie's usual antics were hilarious as normal, even though there were times when I feared she'd get close to her portrayal from "Filli Vanilli" in terms of how oblivious to others she was becoming. Twilight's ever-present awkwardness in being the centre of attention was always adorable to see, and the other characters all provided some very amusing moments, especially the scenes between Rarity and Applejack.

Onto the songs now and this episode doesn't have any, which is a disappointment.

When it comes to the moral of the episode, this week it seems to be that we have yet another example of the group forgoing the journal entries they've used for other morals, thus leaving it once again for the audience to interpret for themselves. For my money, I consider this episode's moral to be that we shouldn't lose focus on what really matters in life, even during those times when we think we know what we want. I've had several experiences in my life of thinking that I want something, only for my pursuit of it to make me realise that it wasn't that important to begin with. As such, I think it's a good lesson to be teaching.

So, how did this episode fare overall? I think I enjoyed this one a great deal. There was nothing major to overcome, but all of the characters got a chance to shine and it was a fairly calm and relaxing episode. The jokes hit their mark for the most part and while the basic premise wasn't anything new or revolutionary, I still think it was executed well. This is far from being one of the better episodes of the season, but it is nevertheless an enjoyable one, and I heartily recommend it.
